Display’s performance is slower than usual

Article summary

Description:
Sometimes you may encounter something wrong with the data being displayed. These faults can look like artefacts on the screen, missing elements, stuttering video, animated content not smooth, and so on. It can be server related, but more likely something is wrong with the UPRD/controller.
Overview of possible actions:
  1. Reboot controller
  2. Update Windows
  3. Verify that CPU load and memory usage is similar to other controllers
  4. Check running applications or processes on the controller
  5. Free Space

1. Long uptime
A display controller is just a computer that needs a reboot from time to time. If you notice that the controller's responses are poorer than other controllers, start with a reboot.

2. Windows updates
When the display controller has a permanent connection to the internet, it automatically downloads Windows updates (if not managed). These updates require a reboot to take effect, especially if the device driver update was part of a Windows update. Please perform a reboot and wait for the updates to complete installation. The controller should then return to its previous performance.

3. Verify that CPU load and memory usage is similar to other controllers
If the performance of the controller still suffers, check the CPU load and memory usage:

  1. Open the Task manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC shortcut.
  2. Click the Performance tab.
  3. Check the CPU and Memory sections.
  4. Compare the values with another controller that has no performance issues.
Note: If the controller affected has a higher CPU load and/or memory usage than other controllers, check the temperature and environmental conditions. When the controller overheats, CPU throttling is activated, which can reduce performance.

4. Check running applications or processes on the controller
Performance may be reduced due to applications or processes running in the background.

  1. Open the Task manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC shortcut.
  2. By clicking on the Memory or CPU columns on the Processes tab, you can sort the applications that consume the most memory or CPU resources.
  3. Disable or uninstall unnecessary applications on the controller.

Note: Simpleways UPRDs/controllers come with the OS and necessary parameters already configured. On controllers not supplied by Simpleway, we recommend that you install the new OS without running any other applications. The controller should only be dedicated to run the Simpleway application.

5. Free Space

Although SimpleVue logs are deleted automatically when the free disk space reaches 4 GB, other applications may generate temporary files that accumulate and impact the controller's performance. For basic maintenance, perform the following procedure:

  1. Search for Disk Cleanup utility which is part of the Windows OS.
  2. Run it as administrator.
  3.  Wait for a diagnostics and delete anything the utility detects.
Note: Most of the files that need to be deleted are Windows update files and logs.

If none of the steps above have solved the performance issues, Simpleway is always ready to help.
